What are the different types of SSL certificates?

Domain Validation (DV)

A Domain validation (DV) SSL certificate is available for all individuals, businesses, sole traders and private customers. There is no paperwork; you only need to pass validation via email. It takes 3-8 minutes to receive the SSL certificate after passing verification. DV certificate is also the cheapest of all SSLs.

Most Domain Validation SSL comes with Static Site Seal logo. We recommend using Domain validation SSL certificates for small websites and systems when end user's trust is not a high priority task for you.

Organization Validation (OV)

Nowadays, Organization validation (OV) SSL certificates have become more and more popular on the market, as end-users can verify business name, the address of a company, and the phone number of the website they are visiting. That boost conversions and increase sales. Domain validation SSL certificates check domain ownership only, but anyone can be the owner and put any company in contacts. Organizational SSL verifies all that information and give greater assurance for buyers.

Extended Validation (EV)

The most amazing feature of this certificate is the Green Address Bar with verified company name. An Extended validation (EV) SSL certificate requires a longer checking process compared to Domain and Organizational validation certs, but you will get the highest possible trust level from all visitors and customers. All EV certs come with Dynamic Site Seal logo for instant positive attention.

Wildcard SSL Certificates

Wildcard SSL certificates allow you to protect unlimited sub-domains within same domain instead of having to purchase multiple single domain certs. Most Wildcard certificates support unlimited server licensing and installation to as many servers or devices as you want in versatile combination of sub-domains. All SSL certificates above, DV, OV and EV, have their own wildcard version of the certificate.

But which certificate is best for you?

That really depends on your budget. The DV will work just fine for any ecommerce web site but if you want to build more trust we would recommend using an SSL certificate with OV or EV. Both will work and do the job. Keep in mind that you must have an active company in good standing to order such a certificate. There is a verification process included before the SSL is issued by the vendor. You will be contacted via phone and you may be required to send specific documents showing you own the company the SSL is issued for.
